Box 586, I-34014 Trieste, Italy ABSTRACT In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80 (1998) 1690], Krim and coworkers have observed that the friction force, acting on a thin physisorbed layer of N2 sliding on a lead film, abruptly decreases by a factor of∼ 2 when the lead film is cooled below its superconductivity transition temperature. We discuss the possible mechanisms for the abruptness of the sliding friction drop, and also discuss the relevance of these results to the problem of electronic friction.

One of the problems for use of rubber in various industries is surface tension at the surface of rubbers, which results in the crack on the surface, fracture of the rubber and reduces its life. These tensions are caused by contacting the rubber component with the metal surface and the friction between two surfaces. Roughness of the surface, the composition of the rubber compound, the environmen...

Earthquake Analysis of 3-D Structures on Sliding Foundation Using Yield Equation of the Contact Surface

A solution technique for the dynamic analysis of asymmetric base-isolated buildings, subject to earthquake ground motion, is presented. To develop the formulation, a yield surface as a function of both shear force and torsion moment of the sliding surface with rigid perfectly plastic behavior is constituted. To achieve the objective, the yield stress is defined by the friction coefficient throu...

Sliding Friction Contact Stiffness Model of Involute Arc Cylindrical Gear Based on Fractal Theory

Gear’s normal contact stiffness played an important role in the mechanical equipment. In this paper, the M-B fractal model is modified and the contact surface coefficient is put forward to set up the fractal model, considering the influence of friction, which could be used to calculate accurately the involute arc cylindrical gears’ normal contact stiffness based on the fractal theory and Hertz ...

Why sliding friction of Ne and Kr monolayers is so different on the Pb(111) surface.

To understand the tribological properties of Ne and Kr on Pb(111), the potential energy surfaces for sliding motion of Ne, Kr, and Xe monolayers on the Pb(111) surface are examined through density functional calculations, using either local density or self-consistent nonlocal van der Waals functionals. The calculated adsorption energy for Xe/Pb(111) agrees well with experiment, validating the p...
